Team spirit - the most sought after concept in the field of management. The tone in which these two words are uttered signifies the success status of a team. A member from a successful team has a lot of praise while a member from a not so successful team, has to share more than a cup of woes.
What is the best way to foster team spirit? Is team spirit a group thing or an individual thing? Being a team player - does it mean I have to compromise on my success? and finally, If I focus on my own success, does that mean I am not a team player?
These are some questions that gets thrown during any motivation or team building exercise across the world. Answers are a aplenty, but let’s see the basics of team spirit by answering the following questions.
What makes a good or a successful team? The answer to this question is very simple - A good team is one where everyone is treated equally, respected for their abilities, without comparing them with others and encouraged to achieve their individual goals as per their abilities and potential. This should be the configuration of a good team.
Unfortunately we live in a world which is far from idealistic or even realistic. In this opportunitstic world, Where productivity and efficiency takes a back seat in lieu of being accepted, you have to strive hard to be accepted , irrespective of your performance capabilities. To survive in this team or to be termed as a team player you don’t question the conventional opinion and should go with the popular sentiments. This team doesn’t respect individuality but worships the process of ‘Yes Master!’
On the other hand a team where everyone realizes that they all went through the same process of recruitment to get in to the organisation or work on a given project, where they all were brought in with the thought that given the right opportunity anyone can and will learn with the sole intention of winning in their life, with utmost respect for all individuals would become a great team.
If only we foster the thought of Self-belief, where I realize I have different qualities and all through my life I have won using these qualities to th fullest. Like me others also have their own quality parmeters and they also want to win in their life through the chosen field of work or opportunity, then this team will truly become a great team.
So my friends, if you have to have team spirit then you have to foster individuality. If I know what my true worth is then i will respect others in my team. A team where everyone respects the other for their different qualities then we have a tem that is truly a successful team

Rajesh
